First time meeting daughters boyfriend

by Donna Goellner
(Tampa, Florida, USA)

My husband and I are divorced by his mothers doing and choice! Today my adult daughter brought her very first serious boyfriend to meet each of us. I was to pick her up at her dad's mothers home with her boyfriend to take them back to his plane. When I got their she came out of the house and said okay he will be right out and we can leave. They don't want you guys in there ( my family) . We have had past situations and everything has been fine. But today we were made to wait at the curb like a taxi service. Then on top of it his mother comes out and says oh we have plenty of food inside would you like me to bring you out something?
Was this rude??

Dear Donna,

It certainly sounds rude to me. It is also a pretty nasty way to handle the blended family situation. Since it appears your ex mother-in-law will continue to expressed her dislike for you, I suggest you accept this and lower your expectations. Then she cannot upset you, which she obviously likes to do.

Thanks for your sad but interesting question.
