Graduation gift?

by Kay
(San Antonio, texas)

When my daughter graduated last year she was given a $500 check from my sister. This is an unusually large amount of money for my extended family. Am I obligated to give the same amount to her son next year when he graduates? Within my family a gift of $100 is the norm.
Thanks for your advice.

Dear Kay,

As far as proper practical etiquette is concerned, you give a gift that you wish to give that is within your budget. There is no obligation for you to "match" gifts.

Thanks for the interesting question.

Best,

Ms Practical Etiquette
