Hostile hostess help

by Teresa
(Medford Oregon)

My mother in law never calls the house to invite me to family functions, She calls my husband and invites him. He says I am invited too, but in 25 yrs of marriage she never calls me. I always thought the hostess calls and says party is at 5 , bring potato salad and dress casual. Am I wrong to feel snubbed or should I accept the 2nd hand invitation?

Dear Teresa,

I think the more important question is, "can my mother-in-law change after 25 years?"! But I digress....

Your feeling snubbed is understandable. However, I imagine, rather than a slight, this is simply her way. Since you and your husband live together, I do not regard this as a second hand invitation. She is just more comfortable calling her son. I doubt she is going to change. However, you can change your mind about her intentions which would bring some peace to the situation.

Good luck!
