How to ask for a gift...

by Mike
(Wisconsin)

I am going to be graduating from college soon. That same week is going to be my birthday. I am having a small get together after the ceremony and inviting some close friends and family. I really don't need anything except a new mattress. I do not want to ask people for money, but I really don't want a bunch of gifts I don't need or will use. How do you tell people what you want without flat out asking and sounding tacky?

Hello Mike,

There was a time when asking for what you need was always improper, however under some circumstances it can be done. I am assuming you are in your early 20's based upon your narrative and that is an excellent position for this little caper. Tell some family members whom you trust of your need for a new mattress instead of random gifts. Everyone knows that is a very expensive item. The word will spread and you will receive money from some of the attendees. Remember, actual gifts can be returned for cash too!!

Good luck.
