Is it ok to donate scholarship money I have received

My son competed for and was awarded a scholarship from an employee association at my job. He recently learned of a young woman who lost both her parents (who also worked where I work) when they were hit by a drunk driver. She is set to go to college at the same time as my son. My son earned so many scholarships and grants that his education will be fully paid for. Is it ok for him to donate a scholarship he was granted to the young lady who lost her parents?

Scholarships

Dear parent,

Congratulations to your son on his impressive achievements and thoughtfulness.

If the scholarship rules allow for transfer to someone other than the winner, then this is a matter of personal choice. However, be certain this is permissible before you move forward. You may want to check with the provider of the scholarship. It would be a terrible disappointment to the intended recipient if the scholarship were not accepted by the college.

Good luck.
