Can I just attend the luncheon for a first communion without going to the mass?

There is a very short answer to your question. No, it is never polite to skip the main event and then show up for the reception, luncheon, or dinner.

When you are asked to join in a celebration, you are being invited to share in a very special time in a person's life. This is what they wish to share with you. It is not about the meal.

Etiquette dictates that you attend the main event before you enjoy the reception. If you are unable to do so, send an appropriate RSVP explaining you won't be able to attend the first communion mass OR the luncheon.

I hope this explanation answers your question, Jackie.
