The only hard and fast rule in this situation states that the couple who invited the others to the dinner, pays the check. If the four of you came up with this idea in a burst of synergy, then who pays is not important. Decide among yourselves. If both couples insist on picking up the check, then the last one to argue for the check will win the right to pay for everyone!
