Proper RSVP

by Roland
(CT)

I was invited to a wedding prior to people knowing about my divorce. The envelope is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. but I have a girlfriend. What is the proper thing to do?

Wedding Invitation Response
by: Ms P Etiquette

Hello Ronald~

If you RSVP to this wedding invitation by declining include a very short note saying you are answering only for yourself and not your former wife. One reason you may wish to decline is to avoid causing any discomfort at this important event. It is not the place to announce your divorce by causing embarrassment or speculation on the part of the guests.

If you want to attend, RSVP for yourself only, similar to the declining RSVP.

DO NOT ASK to bring your girlfriend. That is gravely unacceptable.

Thank you for your inquiry. These situations can be frustrating and disconcerting. I wish you well.
