Smelly Roomates

by Chris
(San Jose CA USA)

How do you tell a new roomate that the smell and need to bathe more often and wash clothese more often. The smell is permeating through my house now, and I can't stand it anymore.

New roomate, 3 months. Temporary arrangement as he just got new job in our city, and he is a cousin. Very nice guy, but does not bathe frequently or wash his clothes frequently, subsequently putting onthe same smelly clothes. Throws them in pile on floor. I think mixes dirty and clean clothes together. Never had this issue with any roomates in the past. so stumped as how to handle.

Roommate Challenges
by: Ms P Etiquette

Hello Chris:

This is indeed a sticky situation. However, he is your cousin which gives you permission to try to "help" him. Let him know you understand his is busy with his new job so he probably hasn't had time to get very settled, but that you wish to point out you have noticed that his clothes need to be laundered and that he doesn't seem to shower daily. Ask if there is anything you can do to help him so he has time to take care of the laundry and himself. If that does not work, you will have to decide whether to speak bluntly to him or not. It is never poor manners to ask that your environment be kept clean and pleasant. Finding the best way to do this can be elusive, however.

Good luck!
