It is wonderful that you son and his girlfriend see this as an important next step. The "where" is less important than the "when". There is nothing that etiquette would dictate as to the proper place. Let the couple suggest a venue. If both sets of parents would feel more comfortable at a "neutral" site, perhaps a nice restaurant may bean appropriate alternative.
