step mother or father's wife?

by Kate
(Georgia)

My father has remarried and my mother has passed away. I am married and am wondering is his new wife considered my step mother or is it okay to refer to her as my father's wife since she is not raising me? I was wondering also how to refer to her adult children (step brother/ step sister)? We are all adults and live in different cities.

Thank you,
Kate

Hello Kate,

Whatever you all decide as a blended family is fine. Since everyone is an adult, why not welcome your father's new wife and call her by her first name. When referring to your father's wife, calling her just that is fine. You do have step siblings, and unlike the "mother" scenario, even as adults you are all step to each other. but first names are always an easy way out.
