do i give my son 200.00 dollars for christmas plus a gift and give his wife a gift. (a very nice one at that) or do i give the 200.00 dollars addressed to both my son and his wife?

You may do either. It depends upon the purpose of the gift. A gift of cash can be personal or family oriented. If it is your desire to give your son the cash directly, the do so. He may share it with her if he wishes. However, if there is any friction between you and your daughter in law, please consider the consequences your cash giving may have on their marriage. And do not suggest he keep it a secret from her.

I know you will do the right thing. It is always polite and practical to give from the heart.
